Fraunhofer是制订MP3格式标准的公司。Fraunhofer发布了新的MP3 5.1声道环绕声编码格式，让完整的5.1声道的音乐能被方便地压缩和下载。
这种新的编码是由Fraunhofer和Thomson共同发布的，Thomson的Henri Linde说：“我们常常问自己，音频文件未来路在何方？看起来往环绕声方向发展是合乎我们的逻辑的。”
使用前提：
拥有一块5.1或7.1声道声卡，以及相应的音箱或物理5.1声道耳机。
安装5.1声道mp3解码器：
Windows 2000, XP (exe-file, 3 MB, Version 2.0.0)
Mac OS X (dmg-file, 3,8 MB, Version 2.0.1)
Linux (Link to downloadpage of www.all4mp3.com; command line decoder)
